Sunshine Among the Clouds challenges us in the same way as life to make it through the dark, difficult portions for the reward of all the happy, exciting events that life offers. While those dark times can be a challenge, without them, we wouldn’t be able to truly appreciate the joy when it comes. The book might be described as an autoduography, since it tells the same life as described through two very different lenses. The first half describes decades of suffering through every failure and dark emotion of the human psyche. The second half recaps the same life with focus on every positive feeling from growth to excitement and passion to success. The Afterword explains how the presentation of the two extremes illustrates the control that each of us have in how we perceive and appreciate the time we’re given. Sometimes, all we need is a little sunshine among the clouds to warm our day and brighten our outlook on life.

PrefaceAs I learned that there were no right answers after the loss, I spent that holiday season in complete darkness figuratively and literally. During the time of year for people to decorate their homes with brightly colored lights and gratefully celebrate with people closest to them, the only light in my house was this computer screen.
I began with my first memory of fear and typed every awful recollection of my entire life, listening to the angriest, heaviest metal music in the background. I dug into the far corners of my mind for the darkest events and thoughts that most people know to leave buried versus ever admit or relive. After reaching rock bottom on the day of the funeral, I reset to the beginning of my personal timeline by documenting so many happy moments and exciting experiences of the same lifespan. The Afterword stitches the two halves of the story together, demonstrating the significance of perspective and appreciation in the lives we each receive. |
